Our DNA

dare to be different

Inspired by a unique historic site, the concept of our hotel to complete the Old Town skyline was born. Breathing life into a 50-year derelict gap site has been realised through the minds of innovative and ambitious thinkers. Made possible by our globally renowned architects, JMARCHITECTS and acclaimed design studio, FG Stijl.

By drawing inspiration from this captivating setting, we have created a hotel that is original and bold, that stands out from the crowd as one of Edinburgh’s most highly anticipated openings. You’ll find a fresh take on contemporary design and community, with captivating views and alluring interiors that celebrate Edinburgh’s Scottish heritage.

We’re more than simply a place to stay. Discover a place of passion, inspiration and creativity where you can connect with our city and be yourself again.

Vision & Inspiration

The organisational challenge was to design a hotel that truly responds to its unique historic context whilst providing a modern and exciting guest experience, befitting a hotel of international significance. The underlying concept was one of connection to place and the desire to create guest rooms in a variety of configurations and outlooks to the city, offering every guest a highly individual experience.

The stone roofscape gives shelter to the top floor lounge and reception. The positioning of reception on the hotel’s 7th floor, with direct access by lift, breaks away from the traditional approach of a hotel arrival at the ground floor and ensures the guest’s first experience is the spectacular panoramic views of the city.

The modern ‘cracked’ stone walls are a distinguishing feature of our fabulous atrium and a subtle nod to the dried earth of the historic Nor Loch, that formed part of the inspiration behind Market Street hotel and in particular our rooftop Champagne Lounge, Nor’ Loft.

VIBRANT DESIGN

A PLACE OF INSPIRATION

Our design process and conceptualisation were driven by the idea that the spatial compositions and materiality of the adjacent Scottish Baronial historic context should be emphasised – the contemporary architecture politely acknowledging the past without imitating it. We focused our design on the details, going as far as sourcing stone from within 90 miles of the site, that is both visually and geologically, a strong match for Edinburgh’s historic Craigleith sandstone, which is no longer readily available.

Seen from the adjacent New Town and Princes Street, the walls of cream stone and dark stone rise above the parklands of Waverley valley to create a beautifully layered composition, complementing the iconic skyline of spires and turrets that makes Edinburgh famous around the world.
